Gatchaman es un anime que trata de las aventuras de 5 jóvenes defendiendo a la Tierra de las amenazas del Espacio Exterior. Fue producida por la Tatsunoko Productions. Se emitió en Japón en octubre de 1972. Consta de 105 episodios, con cuyo metraje se han hecho en Occidente varias adaptaciones, como La batalla de los planetas (conocida popularmente como Comando G) y Fuerza G.
En Japón, a raíz del éxito de Gatchaman, se produjeron dos secuelas: Gatchaman II ,Gatchaman F y en el año del 2013 se produjo y emitió la serie ´´Gatchaman Crowds´´. Ambas también han sido emitidas en otros países, y en particular, la distribuidora estadounidense Saban combinó episodios de ambas para dar lugar a una nueva adaptación (Eagle Riders o Comando águila), que se ha emitido en multitud de países.
Existen igualmente tres episodios adicionales, producidos en 1994 y lanzados en formato OVA en Japón en ese mismo año. En 2013 se realizó un reboot de la saga, denominado Gatchaman Crowds
Tachikawa, Japón, es una "segunda metrópoli" de Tokio, protegida por los Gatchaman, guerreros que luchan en trajes reforzados especiales impulsados por la manifestación de sus poderes espirituales llamada NOTA. Earth is under siege from the alien menace known only by the name Cybercon and its legion of android forces, the Vorak. The Global Security Council convenes to address this problem, and calls upon Dr. Thaddeus Keane for assistance. They remember the aid they had received from Keane's special force, the Eagle Riders, in years past. Keane assures them that the Eagle Riders are still together, still strong, and armed with brand new weapons.

In the year 2066, the Republic of Hontworl, a charter member of the United Nations, leaves the organization without explaining its motives. This causes an outrage within the U.N. and places the security of the world on edge. Soon after this incident, Myori, the capital of the Republic of Triad, is attacked by a bird-like, flying fortress known as the Turtle King. The International Science Organization, which is headed by Dr. Kouzaburou Nanbu, is tasked to deal with this mysterious enemy. At the same time, the leading scientists of the ISO are disappearing. The five members of the Science Ninja Team, the Gatchaman warriors, are called upon to get to the bottom of things.
