The Midnight Special es un programa musical emitido en horario nocturno por la cadena NBC durante los años 70s y principios de los 80s creado y producido por Burt Sugarman. El primer programa fue emitido como un especial el 19 de Agosto de 1972 y comenzó su emisión regular el 2 de Febrero de 1973, su última emisión fue el 1 de Mayo de 1981. El programa, de 90 minutos de duración se emitía los Viernes después del "The Tonight Show" presentado por Johnny Carson. El programa tuvo varios presentadores excepto en el período de Julio de 1975 hasta Marzo de 1976 en el que la cantante Helen Reddy lo presentó de forma habitual. Wolfman Jack fue también presentador del programa siendo Helen Reddy una de sus frecuentes invitadas. La canción tradicional folk "Midnight Special" cantada por Johnny Rivers era la que servía de sintonía del programa.

In the racially turbulent UK of the early 70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story.

This was one of a series of concerts James Brown gave at the Apollo in Harlem in March 1968. This performance was broadcast on television as James Brown: Man To Man.
In addition to 16 vintage color performances from the concert, this special also includes film of James Brown walking the streets of Harlem and Watts as he speaks to the state of Black America and describes the political and socioeconomic advances that need to be accomplished:
