Baseado no popular web-mangá de Hidekazu Himaruya, Hetalia pode ser descrito como uma “cínica piada” centrada na Europa entre os anos da 1ª e da 2ª Guerra Mundial (1915-1939), usando caricaturas exageradas das diferentes nacionalidades retratadadas por um grupo de bishonens. Por exemplo, o italiano é louco por massas e mulheres, o alemão ama batatas e salsichas, e o japonês é um otaku. O título do mangá vem das palavras em japonês “Inútil” (hetare) e “Itália” (Italia).

O desenho mostra as aventuras de Dick Vigarista e sua Esquadrilha Abutre, caçando freneticamente o pombo-correio Doodle, que leva mensagens secretas da resistência para os aliados durante a I Guerra Mundial. Os membros da Esquadrilha Abutre são Dick Vigarista, Muttley, Klunk e Zilly, além do General que comanda tudo à distância. Dick Vigarista e Muttley também aparecem na série A Corrida Maluca.

The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century is a 1996 documentary series that aired on PBS. It chronicles World War I over eight episodes. It was narrated by Dame Judi Dench in the UK and Salome Jens in the United States.

The series won two Primetime Emmy Awards: one for Jeremy Irons for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance, the other for Outstanding Informational Series. In 1997, it was given a Peabody Award.
