L'esperienza di un giovane professore di francese in una difficile scuola di periferia, "complicata" dalla sua personale ricerca: quella di mantenere un atteggiamento "neutrale" ma fermo nei confronti dei ragazzi, cercando di istruirli senza addomesticarli e sforzandosi di portarli di fronte ai loro limiti per far loro prendere coscienza di essi e motivarli ad andare oltre.
