Seguendo un segnale radio Alf si schianta sul garage della famiglia Tanner che, non sapendo come comportarsi, lo accoglie e lo tiene al sicuro dalla NASA e dai propri vicini, finché i lavori per riparare l'astronave non saranno ultimati. Alf ha abbandonato il suo pianeta natale, Melmac, perché è andato incontro all'apocalisse nucleare (causata dall'accensione contemporanea da parte di tutti gli abitanti del pianeta di un asciugacapelli...) ed è convinto di essere l'unico sopravvissuto della sua specie. Diventa a questo punto un membro della famiglia Tanner, sempre tenuto nascosto, imparando fin troppo bene a sopravvivere alla monotonia casalinga dedicandosi alla televisione e al cibo. I Tanner sono la classica famiglia americana composta dal capofamiglia Willie Tanner, che lavora per i servizi sociali, sua moglie Kate, la figlia maggiore adolescente Lynn e il piccolo Brian. Successivamente la famiglia Tanner si arricchirà, nell'ultima stagione, di un nuovo membro: il piccolissimo Eric.

Nel mondo futuristico di "Kaiba" è stata inventata una tecnologia in grado di estrarre e trasferire i ricordi di una persona in un chip, che può essere poi inserito in un altro corpo. Con questo sistema di corpi intercambiabili la morte fisica è stata privata del suo significato. È inoltre possibile modificare, alterare e addirittura rubare i ricordi. Il protagonista, Kaiba, si risveglia privo di ricordi in una stanza semidistrutta, con un buco nel petto e uno strano disegno sul ventre. Il suo unico indizio per conoscere la sua identità è un medaglione con la foto sfocata di una ragazza. Attaccato improvvisamente senza sapere il perché, Kaiba fugge nello spazio e inizia a viaggiare, in cerca della donna e dei suoi ricordi.

During its first season, the series was originally part of NBC's Prime Time Begins at 7:30 campaign, in which the network's owned-and-operated stations would run first-run sitcoms in the 7:30-8 pm time slot to counterprogram competing stations' game shows, sitcom reruns and other offerings. Out of This World was rotated with the original series Marblehead Manor and She's the Sheriff, a syndicated revival of the 1983 sitcom We Got It Made, and a television adaptation of the play You Can't Take It With You. NBC ended the experiment after the 1987-88 season due to the low ratings put up by three of the series, with Out of This World being one of the two that was renewed. After its first season the series was largely moved to weekend time slots, where it remained until its cancellation following the fourth season.
