Melvin Udall este un tip afurisit, un romancier curios ce pare că suferă de o boală psihică. Are fixurile și maniile lui: același mic dejun în același restaurant, servit de aceeași chelneriță, singura care îi suportă hachițele. Carol Connelly este singură și luptă să-și crească fiul bolnav de astm. Simon Nye este un pictor talentat, homosexual, ceea ce e de ajuns pentru a stârni injuriile lui Melvin.
