헤이세이 건담 3연작 중의 하나. 기동무투전 G건담 다음으로 만들어진 작품으로, 상업적으로 상당히 성공한 건담이자 건담을 좀 더 대중에게 보편적으로 알리고, 미국 등지에 건담을 알린 작품이기도 하다.[6] 그리고 탈건담의 시초이자 가장 성공적으로 건담에서 탈피한 G건담의 바통을 이어 엄청난 상업적 성공을 거둠으로써 비우주세기 건담을 자리잡게 만들고 신건담이 제작될 수 있는 토양을 만들어낸 작품이기도 하다. 또한 이 작품이 노벨화가 되면서 건담의 노벨화가 지금처럼 체계적으로 진행되게 되었다.

In 2017, a group of genius scientists achieve a remarkable breakthrough in bioengineering. However, all the new technologies are put into military use, beginning a new round of arms race. Vanguards, as the most significant achievement of the modern bioengineering and the most advanced weapon, are widely utilized in the race. Although vanguards are exceptionally combat-effective, their life expectancy is shortened by the nanomachines they use. Usually, most vanguards will retire from the army after a number of years in service.

The heroine Liuli has also consumed too much of her lifespan after executing missions for a long time. With only 380 days left in her life, Liuli receives a new mission, to rescue a hostage being held in a civilian facility.
