미국 로키산맥의 작은 마을 도그빌. 어느 날 총소리와 함께 아름다운 여자 그레이스가 찾아온다. 갱들한테 쫓기는 그를 마을 사람들은 불안해하면서도 숨겨준다. 2주 동안의 유예기간을 두고 그레이스를 관찰한 마을 사람들은 고운 심성과 지적 능력, 무엇보다 자기 몸을 아끼지 않는 헌신적인 노동을 높이 사 마을의 일원으로 받아들인다. 어느 날 경찰이 나타나 수배 전단을 붙이자 상황은 급변한다. 숨겨주는 대가로 노예 수준으로 전락한 노동을 강요하더니 급기야 내놓고 성적 학대를 가한다. 결국 그레이스는 마을을 탈출하기로 결심하지만 그녀의 계획은 수포로 돌아가고, 마을 사람들은 그녀가 도망가지 못하도록 개목걸이를 채우기까지 하는데...
