Republika San Magnolia je stát oficiálně sestávající z 85 provincií, který je dlouhou dobu ve válce s říší Giadian. Obě strany dle veřejných zpráv bojují pouze za pomoci plně automatizovaných dronů, a tak jde o válku bez obětí na životech. Tedy alespoň tak to tvrdí vláda. Skutečnost je však taková, že žádná válka bez krve a smrti neexistuje. Za chráněnými hranicemi 85 provincií se nachází pro civilisty neznámý sektor 86, kde žijí lidé bez jakýchkoli práv a svobod, kteří pokud chtějí dokázat, že mají nárok na normální život, musí pilotovat ozbrojené drony ve válce – ty samé drony, které oficiálně žádné piloty nemají.
Na této straně hranice se nachází elitní jednotka Spearhead, kterou vede mladík Shin, zatímco v srdci samotné republiky daleko od nebezpečí sedí za monitorem Lena, která dává těmto dronům rozkazy. Spearhead si udělali mezi ostatními velké renomé a zároveň přivedli již několik takových „velitelů mimo bojiště“ do blázince nebo i k sebevraždě. (Jeoffrey)
