A retired and widowed Chinese master chef Chu and his family live in modern day Taipei, Taiwan. He lives with his three attractive daughters, all of whom are unattached. Soon, each of the daughters encounter new men in their lives. When these new relationships blossom, stereotypes are broken and the living situation within the family changes.

Εκείνος, για να κερδίσει χρόνο, μήπως και μπορέσει να βρει απαντήσεις στις υπαρξιακές αγωνίες και τα μεταφυσικά προβλήματα που τον ταλανίζουν προτείνει στο Θάνατο να παίξουν μια παρτίδα σκάκι και όταν τελειώσει, αυτή να είναι και η τελευταία προθεσμία του.

Δύο ολότελα διαφορετικοί άνδρες, που ανακαλύπτουν ότι δεν τους μένει πολύς χρόνος ζωής, ξεκινούν ένα ταξίδι με "οδηγό" μια... λίστα στην οποία έχουν σημειώσει όλες τις ανεκπλήρωτες επιθυμίες τους.

Μία ημέρα από τη ζωή τριών γυναικών που ανήκουν σε διαφορετικές εποχές (1920, 1950, 2000) και που φαινομενικά δεν τις ενώνει τίποτα, πέρα από το μυθιστόρημα "Η κυρία Νταλογουέι" της Βιρτζίνια Γουλφ. Έχουν όμως κοινό σημείο αναφοράς, ότι αναζητούν νόημα στη ζωή τους, παλεύουν ενάντια στις κοινωνικές επιταγές και συμβάσεις της εποχής τους, ενώ φλερτάρουν με την ιδέα της τρέλας ή της αυτοκτονίας.

Ποιο είναι το νόημα της ζωής; Μήπως είναι η εργασία; Μήπως η μάθηση; Η οικογένεια; Ο πλούτος; Και τι κάνουμε όταν ο θάνατος μας χτυπά την πόρτα; Η ταινία προσπαθεί να δώσει μια απάντηση στα βασανιστικά ερωτήματα: ποιοι είμαστε, από πού ερχόμαστε, έχει η ζωή μας κάποιο νόημα ή όλα είναι μάταια; Αλλά… περιμένετε! Εδώ δεν πρόκειται για καμιά φιλοσοφική πραγματεία! Εδώ πρόκειται για τους Monty Python, που με το θεότρελο, άσεμνο χιούμορ τους, δεν αφήνουν τίποτα όρθιο! Σατιρίζουν μέχρι τελικής πτώσεως όλους τους κοινωνικούς περιορισμούς που μας εμποδίζουν να χαρούμε την ομορφιά της ζωής...
