Mistr japonské animace Mamoru Hosoda již před lety deklaroval svou fascinaci starou francouzskou pohádkou “Kráska a zvíře” a ve svém sedmém filmu ji také převedl na plátno. Učinil tak ovšem zcela originálním a ryze současným způsobem. Otevírá před námi dva světy, naprosto rozdílné a přesto bytostně propojené. Prvním je japonská vesnice, v níž plachá a neobratná Suzu prožívá svůj neutuchající smutek ze smrti matky, která jí vzala schopnost zpívat a odcizila ji jejímu otci. Druhým je virtuální svět “U”, do nějž může vstoupit kdokoli, začít znovu a (třeba i) změnit svět. A právě tady se Suzu mění v Belle, znovu nachází svůj hlas a díky svým písním plným toho nejupřímnějšího citu se stává hvězdou “U”. Kromě obdivovatelů tu ale potkává i Zvíře, zjizvenou obludu, zápasící v bojových uměních, brutální, nespoutanou – a samotářskou. Společně se vydávají na cestu dobrodružství, nebezpečí a lásky, na cestu, která odhalí jejich skutečné já.
