En 1893, en Afrique du Sud, un jeune avocat indien, Mohandas K. Gandhi, subit un affront raciste. Dès lors, il se dévoue à défendre ses compatriotes victimes de lois injustes, ce qui lui vaut diverses avanies mais aussi une réputation internationale pour sa théorie de la non-violence dans la lutte qu'il mène. Il rentre en 1915 dans son pays, alors sous contôle britannique, et joint ses forces à celles d'un groupe de politiciens qui veulent obtenir l'autonomie politique. L'Inde obtient son indépendance en 1947, mais Gandhi meurt assassiné l'année suivante.
