המדבר המצרי 1923. ריק אוקונל, הרפתקן אמריקני נועז המשרת בלגיון הזרים הצרפתי, חושף במקרה את הריסות עיר המתים הפרעונית אמונאפטרה. אוולין, ספרנית המומחית לתרבות מצרים, ואחיה ג'ונתן, משכנעים את ריק שיוביל אותם לעיר האגדית, שם טמון עושר עצום, שיסייע לפענוח חידות רבות. אך במקום שורצת קללה עתיקה - כשכוהן הדת אימהוטפ התאהב בפילגשו של פרעה, הטילו עליו הרשויות קללה מחרידה: גופו החנוט יישאר בחיים לנצח ויסבול עינויים נוראיים. חבורת ההרפתקנים מגיעה לעיר המתים, שם מגיח אימהוטפ מקברו ומתחיל להטיל הרס עליהם.

בשנות ה-70' המאוחרות של המאה ה-19 עמדה קיסרות יפן בפתח תקופה חדשה, כאשר רוחות קידמה ומודרניזציה החלו לנשב לפתחה של המעצמה, הודפות ממקומה את תפיסת העולם הפיאודלית שאפיינה את תושבי האי משך שנים רבות. בנקודת זמן זו בדיוק החליט הקיסר מייג'י לחסל את שארית הסמוראים שהמשיכו לחיות בהתאם לתפיסות עולם קודמות, במגמה לנשל אותם ממעמדם ההיסטורי כמשמרי אדמות האימפריה, ולהמשיל עליהם את לוחמיו שלו ברוח האקדח, כלי הנשק של העת החדשה. במגמה להכשיר לוחמים חדשים למשימות אלו, הובא למדינה מטעם הקיסרות הקפטן האמריקאי וודרו אלגרן (טום קרוז), בוגר מלחמת האזרחים האמריקאית העקובה מדם שהתרחשה, פחות או יותר, באותה תקופה. אולם התכניות המקוריות של הקיסר נהרסות, כאשר במהלך קרב בלימה מטעם כוחות הקיסר מול אחרוני הסמוראים נפצע אלגרן, והוא נלכד בשביים של לוחמים עתיקים אלו, שהחרב שימשה ככלי נשקם. באמצעות חוקי המוסר והכבוד שהנחו אותם בחייהם, כבשו הסמוראים את ליבו של אלגרן, ובעודו מחלים, למד בלהט את דרך חייהם ואופן לחימתם. מנהיגם, קטסומוטו, דחק בו לבחור עמדה לקראת הקרב הסופי בין הכוחות.
קצין לגיון הזרים, גאלופ, נזכר בחייו המפוארים של פעם, כשאימון חיילים במפרץ ג'יבוטי. קיומו שם היה שמח, קפדני ומסודר, עד שהגעתו של גיוס צעיר ומבטיח, סנטיין, שותל את זרעי הקנאה במוחו של גאלופ.
אלכסיי, גבר בלארוסי, מגיע לפריז ומצטרף ללגיון הזרים. הוא מקווה שכך יוכל לקבל דרכון אירופי ולפתוח פרק חדש בחייו. מנגד ניצב ג'ומו, גבר ניגרי החי על גדות נהר הניז'ר, שנאבק בחברות נפט בינלאומיות הפוגעות בכפרו. יום אחד מוביל ג'ומו פעולת חטיפה של אזרחים צרפתים. חוליה של לגיון הזרים נשלחת למקום, ובראשה עומד אלכסיי.

In May 1978, the mining town of Kolwezi in Katanga, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo, the former Belgian Congo) is under attack from a group of communist guerillas coming from nearby Angola. The Europeans who work for the Belgian mining company and the Blacks who live in the town are taken as hostages by the invaders, who start a blood bath, shooting Europeans as well as Africans. Many of the Europeans being French, the French decide to organize a counter-attack, and to send a Regiment of Paratroopers from the Foreign Legion. The movie follows the stories of Delbart, a former non-commissioned officer, who was about to go back to France with his African wife and his child, Damrémont, who was Delbart's replacement, Bia, a Zairian doctor, and Annie, an American married to a Belgian engineer as well as Non com Legion officer Federico and the French Ambassador and the Military Attaché.
