回到警局後，警察們開始對他進行侮辱式的查問。蘭保所受到的屈辱讓他回憶起在越南戰場被北越軍殘酷拷打的場面，他因此失控並打倒了數名警察，之後搶走摩托車逃入了市郊的樹林中。小鎮警察展開追捕，卻慘遭痛擊─先是一名欲射殺他的警員自直升機上失足摔死，其他人也被蘭保利用叢林之利弄傷，直到此時，他們才知道這個「逃犯」的特種部隊身分，還曾因越戰中的表現優秀而得過榮譽勳章。
蘭保的襲警成為了新聞事件，而他在越南的前上司崔普曼上校也因此前來勸說警方罷手並嘗試勸降蘭保。然而意欲報仇的鎮警長不顧勸阻，並召集了國民兵支援，將蘭保趕入一處礦坑。但就在大家以為蘭保已被炸死在礦坑內時，早已逃脫的他手持M60通用機槍單槍匹馬回到小鎮，接連炸毀了加油站與野外用品店，並把警察局局長打得重傷。然而，當崔普曼上校現身勸他投降的時候，一直沉默無語的蘭保終於喊出了越戰老兵對於社會的不滿和痛苦。
