USS Voyager, novi istraživački brod klase Intrepid, od Zvjezdane flote dobiva zadatak pronaći Makije (skupinu terorista). I Voyager i Makiji ulaze u opasnu maglicu Badlands te bivaju prebačeni pomoću svemirske sonde u Delta kvadrant koji je 75000 svjetlosnih godina udaljen od planeta Zemlje. Posada Voyagera i Makiji dogovaraju primirje u svrhu spašavanja posada oba broda koje je oteo graditelj sonde, moćni Caretaker. Brod Makija je uništen u borbi s ratobornim narodom Kazonci.
