November 24, 1959

På Jesu tid bliver den jødiske prins Ben-Hur udsat for falske anklager og sendt til galejerne, mens hans mor og søster kommer i fængsel. Under et søslag redder Ben-Hur kaptajnens liv og adopteres af ham som en søn. Årene går, og Ben-Hur bliver en dreven deltager i hestevæddeløb. Men trods sit nye liv har han ikke opgivet at finde sin familie og få hævn over arkitekterne bag anklagerne.

Ashitaka bliver bidt af en dæmon og får en grim infektion. Derfor begiver han sig afsted for at finde guden Shishigami, der efter sigende kan helbrede ham. Undervejs oplever han den åbne konflikt mellem skovens gamle guder. Han er også vidne til minelandsbyens udnyttelser af jordens ressourcer. Ashitaka prøver at mægle, men uden større held.

Erstwhile childhood friends, Judah Ben-Hur and Messala meet again as adults, this time with Roman officer Messala as conqueror and Judah as a wealthy, though conquered, Israelite. A slip of a brick during a Roman parade causes Judah to be sent off as a galley slave, his property confiscated and his mother and sister imprisoned. Years later, as a result of his determination to stay alive and his willingness to aid his Roman master, Judah returns to his homeland an exalted and wealthy Roman athlete. Unable to find his mother and sister, and believing them dead, he can think of nothing else than revenge against Messala.
