Zur schlacksigen Margaret Anne, die von den älteren Jungs für erste sexuelle Experimente benutzt wird, entsteht eine unschuldige Freundschaft, und manchmal fährt er mit dem Bus an den Stadtrand, wo neue geräumige Sozialwohnungen gebaut werden – vielleicht auch für seine Familie.

Worüber er aber mit niemandem spricht: Er war dabei, als sein Freund Ryan im Kanal ertrank, und diese Schuld läßt ihn nicht zur Ruhe kommen.

Nicht jeder, der heute auf der A73 zwischen Nürnberg und Bamberg fährt, weiß, dass er auf einer ehemaligen Wasserstraße unterwegs ist. Noch vor einem halben Jahrhundert verlief hier der alte Ludwig-Donau-Main-Kanal, kurz: Ludwigskanal, der das letzte Puzzlestück einer schiffbaren Verbindung zwischen den Weltmeeren stellte. In sagenhaften zehn Jahren Bauzeit realisiert, war der 1846 eröffnete Kanal ein kleiner Menschheitstraum, verband er doch letztlich Nordsee und Schwarzes Meer miteinander. Leider trug sich die Idee finanziell nicht: Zu mächtig war die Eisenbahn, die zeitgleich ihren Aufstieg erlebte und dem ehrgeizigen Kanalprojekt schon bald im besten Sinne das Wasser abgrub als das in jeder Hinsicht schnellere, bequemere und bessere Transportmittel der Stunde.

In this short film Bert Haanstra gives his vision - from the water – of a tranquil Holland. During filming he held the camera upside down and afterwards put the images ‘up right’ again in the film. By doing this, we see the ‘usual’ waterfront, but transformed by the rippling of the water. In this way Mirror of Holland became a modern looking experimental film. However this did not devalue the Dutch sentiment regarding waterfronts that are so trusted to so many.

Following a traumatic incident, Lily, a socially-aware writer, attempts to restart her life by touring the country with her friend, Zara. After accepting a free boat tour on the "Lady-Jane" through England's canals, the pair begin to realise that there are evils lurking beneath the water that are far more ancient and powerful than they could have ever imagined.

Herr Pierre Van Groot owns two barges. Van Groot, his wife, and his sister-in-law navigate along the north channels between Belgium and France. Herr Pierre transports construction material in his barges but he earns extra francs trafficking in diamonds, which he hides in the boat’s rudder. Pierre engages a new first mate, Michel, who gets wise to the diamond smuggling. The film was shot in 1920, but only shown once in its 80 minute entirety at a private screening in 1924.
