Reconstitution historique à grand spectacle de la vie de celui que l'on surnomma le "mahatma". La carrière de Gandhi comme avocat débute en Afrique du Sud où il défend les droits de la minorité indienne, ce qui a un grand retentissement dans son pays. Plus tard, dans ses luttes contre les Anglais, il prônera toujours la non-violence et usera essentiellement de l'arme de la grève de la faim.

Au XVIème siècle, l'Inde est dominée par la dynastie des empereurs musulmans moghols. Le dernier héritier, Jalaluddin Muhammad, un farouche guerrier, multiplie les batailles pour agrandir le territoire de l'empire. Afin d'unifier tout l'Hindoustan, il consent à épouser Jodhaa, une princesse Rajpoute hindoue. Mais une fois mariés, celle-ci demeure distante avec Jalaluddin, refusant d'être la victime d'une alliance politique...

Miss Adela Quested part épouser en Inde un jeune magistrat. Fuyant le nationalisme étroit et l'arrogance de la colonie anglaise, elle part à la découverte de l'Inde profonde. Sameer Rafilini (Salman Khan), de retour en Inde après s’être installé en Italie, vient pour parfaire son enseignement musical et suivre des cours de chant auprès du maître Pundit Darbar (Vikram Gokhale). Celui-ci l’accueille dans sa maison et le loge dans la chambre de sa fille, Nandini (Aishwarya Rai), ce qui contrarie beaucoup celle-ci. Sameer et Nandini finissent néanmoins par tomber amoureux l’un de l’autre. Hélas, les projets de Pundit Darbar pour sa fille sont tout autres : il souhaite marier celle-ci avec Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), également amoureux de Nandini. Pour cela, il fait promettre à Sameer, redevable de son enseignement musical, de quitter l’Inde et d’oublier Nandini. Sameer, contraint, accepte et repart pour l’Italie. C’est donc le cœur brisé que Nandini se marie avec Vanraj qu’elle déteste…

Un vieil homme malade, Saket Ram, se souvient d'évènements survenus lors de l'obtention de l'indépendance et de la partition de l'Inde. Il menait alors une vie heureuse avec sa femme Aparna . Bien que hindou, il avait pour meilleur ami un musulman, Amjad. Mais lors d'émeutes inter-communautaires, Aparna est violée et tuée. Ram, fou de douleur, se laisse convaincre par un activiste hindou que c'est le Mahatma Gandhi qui est responsable de ces violences...

The story is based in Banaras and is about a Hindu Priest Chaturvedi who follows the scriptures to practice Hindu religion. When a child is abandon by a woman and brought in his house by his daughter - after initial hesitation but due to requests from his wife - the family adapts the child; only to know after 4 years that the child is a Muslim. The family gives away the child and Chaturvedi engulfs himself in the purification process to cleanse his body, mind and soul due to contact with a Muslim soul. By the time, Chaturvedi thinks he is fully purified – the child reappears – seeking refuge, due to Hindu- Muslim riots. This is the time Chaturvedi finally realizes that the true religion is - religion where humans help humans – humanity.

Two storytellers put forth their versions of the story of Shravan Kumar. The art for the film uses painted images from a wooden portable shrine called a Kaavad. The film is a collaborative work between traditional Kaavad storytellers and Kaavad artists from Rajasthan, together with the filmmaker. Combining lush animation with live-action, the film is an interpretation of two stories which are forever fused in the act of telling and retelling.
