La historia comienza cuando el Profesor Utonium hace un experimento tratando de crear a la niñita perfecta mezclando "azúcar, flores y muchos colores" por que se sentía muy solo en casa y con la misma se convertiría en un bello hogar, situado a las afueras de la ciudad de Townsville (Saltadilla en Hispanoamérica). Pero accidentalmente agregó algún otro ingrediente a la fórmula, la "Sustancia X", y tras una explosión así nacieron Las chicas superpoderosas, que tendrían apariencia de 7 años con sus superpoderes: Bombón, Burbuja y Bellota. El profesor tenía un mono como mascota, quien era muy travieso y hace que el profesor tropiece y agregue la sustancia X, la radiación de esta sustancia le da al monito un super cerebro que lo dota de gran inteligencia, pero dado el rechazo del profesor, éste se va y se convierte en el enemigo de las chicas, buscando siempre destruirlas y conquistar el mundo.

By force of circumstances, a 30-year-old single man with a full-time job suddenly starts raising a 6-year-old girl. While running each other ragged, the two of them gradually grow into a "family".

Anzu, Hiiragi, and Koume are three girls who attend the lively Hanamaru Kindergarten. There they have lots of adventures with their classmates and with Naozomi Tsuchida, their teacher who has just started working fresh out of school.

Shinichiro Hanasaki, a former detective with the police department, is currently engaged in running a nursery called “Smiling Garden.” He wishes to help poorer families and single parents by offering very low fees for childcare, but this leaves the nursery struggling financially. To replenish the budget, Shinichiro decides to open a private detective agency at night.
