XIIème siècle, en Angleterre. En l'absence du roi Richard, le shérif de Nottingham règne en tyran sur le pays, aidé par son cousin Guy de Gisbourne, la sorcière Mortianna et le corrompu évêque de Hereford. Lors de son retour en Angleterre aux côtés d'Azeem, Robin revient au château de son père. Mais ce dernier a été tué par les hommes du shérif après avoir refusé de se joindre à eux. Robin jure de venger son père.
En ces temps lointains, les sauvages contrées du Nord de l'Europe étaient peuplées de héros et de monstres, et des hommes audacieux, taillés pour la lutte et les conquêtes, pouvaient encore se forger des destins d'exception. Le plus glorieux d'entre ces aventuriers fut le Viking Beowulf, qui surgit un beau jour pour sauver le vieux roi Hrothgar et ses sujets des assauts d'une féroce créature. Son nom devint vite légendaire à travers le royaume et, partout, l'on chanta sa bravoure face au maléfique Grendel. Beowulf ne devint pas seulement célèbre, mais riche. Et avec la richesse vinrent bientôt de dangereuses tentations et une inextinguible soif de pouvoir. Car le héros était aussi humain, trop humain, sans doute, et le guerrier plus avide, plus ambitieux et bien plus faillible qu'on ne l'imaginait...

As Carpathian legend has it, Oleksa Dovbush was a heroic outlaw with excellent fighting skills and a gift to predict the future. He was left an orphan as a small boy after a local lord murdered Oleksa's mother. After spending his childhood in exile in the mountains, he returned as a grown man to avenge his mother's death. Oleksa gathered followers to begin a crusade against the lord, but destiny made other plans for him.

The Robber Mathias Kneißl became a legend in Bavaria. The film is based on the historical criminal case and describes the last year of the rebel and folk hero. At the age of 23, he is released from prison, where he has served an unreasonably harsh six-year sentence. When this becomes known, he loses his job as a carpenter and now wants to emigrate to America with his girlfriend. He hopes to earn the money for the journey by committing crimes. In the process, he fatally wounds a gendarme. Despite this, Mathias Kneißl does not leave the area and stays in the Dachau hinterland. Only when his girlfriend betrays him is he able to find his hiding place. The farm was besieged by 300 police officers for days and then shot up. Kneißl was seriously injured and treated in a clinic in Munich before being beheaded in Augsburg in 1902.

Jánošík has been topic of many Slovak and Polish legends, books and films. According to the legend, he robbed nobles and gave the loot to the poor. The legend were also known in neighboring Silesia, the Margraviate of Moravia and later spread to the Kingdom of Bohemia. The actual robber had little to do with the modern legend, whose content partly reflects the ubiquitous folk myths of a hero taking from the rich and giving to the poor. However, the legend was also shaped in important ways by the activists and writers in the 19th century when Jánošík became the key highwayman character in stories that spread in the north counties of the Kingdom of Hungary (present Slovakia) and among the local Gorals and Polish tourists in the Podhale region north of the Tatras.
