태국과 버마의 접경에 위치한 사이암 왕국의 뭉쿳 국왕(King Mongkut : 주윤발 분)은 세계 열강들의 제국주의 야욕 속에서 국가의 독립권을 지키려면 제도와 교육을 근대화 하는 것임을 최선으로 생각하고, 자신의 자녀들을 근대화된 서구 교육을 시킬 목적으로 영국의 미망인 애나 레노웬스(Anna: 조디 포스터 분)를 가정교사로 초청한다. 아들을 데리고 사이암 왕국에 도착한 애나는 50명이 넘는 이나라 국왕의 자녀들을 가르치면서 고집센 뭉쿳 국왕과 사사 건건 의견 충돌을 일으킨다. 시간이 지나면서 통치자인 국왕의 고뇌와 인간에 대한 연민을 느껴 그를 동정하게 된 애나는 후궁으로 간택되어온 팁팀(Tuptim: 링 베이 분)이 옛 애인을 잊지 못해 도망치다 붙잡혀 사형 당하는 사건이 발생하자 뭉쿳 국왕의 냉혹하고 이기적인 모습에 실망을 느껴 사이암을 떠나기로 결심한다. 당시 제국주의가 팽배하던 이 지역은 영국과 프랑스의 각축장으로 끊임없이 전쟁이 일어나던 지역으로 사이암 왕국의 알락 장군(General Alak: 랜달 덕 킴 분)은 영국을 경계할 것을 강조하나, 국왕은 오히려 프랑스를 경계해야 한다며 이를 거부한다. 알락은 결국 뭉쿳 왕을 폐지하고 새 왕조를 일으키겠다는 야심으로 궁궐로 진격해 온다. 왕권과 가족을 보호해야 하는 뭉쿳은 애나의 도움으로 가족을 피신시키고 알락을 생포하는데 성공한다. 평화를 되찾자 애나는 뭉쿳 국왕에게 영국으로 떠나겠노라고 말하는데. 부왕 못쿳의 통찰력과 애나의 가르침에 힘입어 출라롱콘 국왕(King Chulalongkorn)은 샴의 독립을 지켰고, 노예제를 폐지하고 종교의 자유를 확립했다.

1988년 버마. 남편과 어린 아들을 강도 사건으로 잃고 탈진한 미국인 의사 로라 바우만은 언니의 충고에 따라 언니 부부와 동남아 여행을 하지만 불행한 기억을 털어내지 못하고 괴로워한다. 어느 날 밤 호텔 창문으로 버마 시위대의 모습을 보고 거리를 나섰다가 독재정권의 앞잡이인 군대 앞에 두려움 없이 맞서는 버마 민주화 투쟁의 영웅 아웅산 수지를 본다.

호텔에 돌아온 그녀는 여권을 잃은것을 알게 되고 새 여권이 나올때까지 언니 부부와 떨어져 혼자 랭군에 남게 된다. 미 대사관에서 나온 그녀는 자칭 비공식 가이드인 아웅코와 교외로 관광을 나섰다가 자동차 고장으로 어려움에 처하지만 운동권 대학생들의 도움으로 어려운 상황을 모면하게 되고 그들로부터 아웅코가 투쟁에 협력한 대가로 강단에서 쫓겨난 전직 교수라는 사실을 알게된다. 다음날 아침 랭군에서는 잔혹한 시위 진압 소식을 들은 일행은 은신처를 버리고 태국 국경으로 향한다. 검문에 걸린 아웅코는 로라의 자동차로 도망치게 되고 그 와중에 중상을 입고 차는 강으로 곤두박질한다. 대나무 장사꾼에게 사정해 배를 얻어탄 로라는 잠시 정박한 마을에서 목숨을 걸고 약을 구해오고 배위에서 직접 아웅코의 총알을 빼낸다.

기력을 회복한 아웅코는 로라가 미대사관 앞에서 체포되자 시위 인파의 도움으로 그녀를 구해낸다. 무지막지한 진압이 시작되고 아웅코와 로라는 태국을 향해 가는 일단의 학생들과 합류한다. 군인들을 쓰러뜨리고 검문소를 통과한 그들은 걸어서 반정부 게릴라 캠프에 도달한다. 다음날 일행은 정부군의 빗발치는 포격속에 태국 땅 난민캠프가 바라다 보이는 강을 건너게 되는데.......

2차 세계대전 중의 미얀마. 메릴 장군 휘하의 스톡턴 중위가 이끄는 소대가 정글을 지나 일본군 점령지인 왈로범 마을을 향해 이동한다. 마을 어귀에 다다른 스톡턴은 기습 작전을 펴고, 작전은 성공한다. 그러나 스톡턴의 소대는 쉴 틈도 없이 다시 북쪽으로 이동하라는 명령을 받는다. 실제로 ‘약탈자들’이라 불렸던 메릴 장군의 부대에서 연락병으로 복무했던 찰튼 오그번 주니어의 논픽션을 바탕으로 한 작품. 풀러는 총격전과 같은 액션보다는 끝이 날 것 같지 않은 행군이 이어지는 동안 병사들이 겪는 신체적·정신적 피로와 고통, 그들의 인내와 정신력에 초점을 맞추었다.

The film tells the story of Chinese guerrillas fighting for the Allied cause in Burma during Early in World War II, Chungking schoolteacher Lin Yang is recruited to help with the dangerous mission of protecting the Allied supply line from Burma into China. In spite of the danger involved, her determination to help is strengthened when one of her young students is killed in a Japanese air raid. Some time later, she is part of a group of Allied representatives departing from Lashio, on a bus traveling the Burma Road back to China. A bridge outage forces them to spend the night in a monastery along the way, and during the night they watch in horror as a supply convoy of trucks is bombed by Japanese planes. The timing and accuracy of the raid brings them to realize that either one of their group, or perhaps the priest in the monastery, is really an enemy agent

A troop of British soldiers are out in the jungle to record jungle noises and troop noises in the jungle so that the recordings can be played back by other troops to divert the enemy to their whereabouts. As they progress to what they think is closer to the base camp they find themselves farther and farther from radio range until the only channel they can get clearly is that of a Japanese broadcast. They now realize they are probably only 10 to 15 miles from a Japanese camp! The tension is added to by rowdy and openly admitted "non-hero" Private Bamforth who has nothing good to say about anyone and especially Corporal Johnstone (who holds an equal dislike for Bamforth). When a Japanese soldier is taken as their prisoner, the true colours of each man comes to the surface

Captured by the Japanese, he escapes from a concentration camp with the aid of beautiful, enigmatic 'China Girl' Miss Young. The two arduously make their way back to friendly lines so that Johnny can deliver the vital military information he's managed to glean from his captors.

In this special Clarkson, Hammond and May don’t just buy three knackered old lorries and drive miles through the beautiful landscapes of Burma. Oh dear no. They actually have to use their lorries to do something useful. They have to build a real, use able bridge over the River Kwai. On their way to the river they almost bring down Burma’s power supply, encounter the world’s least relaxing truck stop, race around the streets of a deserted capital, saddle up a trio of unhelpful horses and attend a completely deranged party.

Leaders like Hitler, Idi Amin Dada, Stalin, Kim Jong Il, Saddam Hussein, Nicolae Ceausescu, Bokassa, Muammar Kadhafi, Khomeini, Mussolini and Franco governed their countries completely cut off from reality. These paranoid leaders were driven to abuse their power by the pathology of power itself. Dictators are driven by a relentless, thought-out determination to impose themselves as infallible, all-knowing and all-powerful beings. But they are also men ruled by their caprices, uncontrollable impulses, and reckless fits of frenzy, which paradoxically render them as human as anyone else. The abuses they committed were clearly atrocious, yet some of them were as outlandish as the characters portrayed in the film The Dictator. They sunk to depths worthy of Kafka: so incredibly absurd, they are outrageously funny.
