A jornada da jovem Suzume de 17 anos começa na pacata cidade de Kyushu quando ela se encontra com um jovem que diz a ela o seguinte: “Estou procurando por uma porta”. O que Suzume encontra é uma única porta desgastada em pé no meio de ruínas, como se estivesse protegida de qualquer catástrofe. Aparentemente hipnotizada por seu poder, Suzume alcança a maçaneta… Portas começam a abrir por todo o Japão, causando destruição a qualquer um que esteja perto delas.
