American Horror Story is een Amerikaanse drama/horror serie bedacht door Ryan Murphy en Brad Falchuk. Ieder seizoen heeft een volledig op zichzelf staand verhaal met nieuwe personages. Dit betreft een bezeten huis (Murder House), een gekkenhuis (Asylum), een groep heksen (Coven), een tentoonstelling met aparte verschijnselen (Freak Show), een mysterieus hotel (Hotel), een boerderij waar gruwelijke dingen plaatsvinden (Roanoke), een sekte (Cult) en het einde der tijden (Apocalypse). Het verhaal volgt de net afgestudeerde verloskundige Jenny Lee, en het werk van de vroedvrouwen en nonnen in een Anglicaans klooster in de achterstandswijk Poplar in het East End van Londen. De zusters en vroedvrouwen voeren verschillende verpleegkundige taken uit in de samenleving. Maar met zo'n 8 tot 100 baby's die elke maand alleen al in Poplar geboren worden, is de primaire taak te zorgen voor een goede bevalling van zwangere vrouwen in de wijk, en nazorg te geven aan de ontelbare baby's.
