Z mora sa vynoria obrovské príšery Kaiju a pustia sa do vojny s ľudstvom, ktorá si vyžiada milióny životov a ľudstvo na roky zaťaží. Pre boj s Kaiju bola vyvinutá špeciálna zbraň: masívni roboti zvaní Jaegers, ktorí sú simultánne ovládaní dvomi pilotmi, ktorých mozgy sú prepojené neurálnym mostom. Lenže aj títo roboti sa tvárou v tvár nezničiteľným Kaiju zdajú byť takmer bezmocní.
