A II. világháború egyik legtragikusabb emléke lehetne, ám egy különleges mentőakció története lett belőle. 1940 májusának végén a diadalmasan előretörő német hadsereg bevonult Belgiumba, és a franciaországi Dunkerque közelében a tengerhez szorította a brit és francia katonákat. A legfeljebb 5 kilométeres szakaszon a szövetségesek több mint 300 000 embere szorult össze, és nem volt merre menekülniük. Az angol flottának különleges és váratlan akcióval, hatalmas veszteségek árán mégis sikerült véghezvinni a mentőakciót – és sikerrel juttatta ki a frontvonalból a szabad világ utolsó hadseregét.
A történet a napóleoni háborúk idején játszódik, főszereplői a Patrick O'Brian regényeiből ismert Jack Aubrey, azaz Lucky kapitány, az angol flotta harcias tisztje és Stephen Maturin, a hajó orvosa. Hajójukat, a Surprise-t, ellenséges támadás éri, amelyben az súlyosan megrongálódik, és a legénység tagjai közül is sokan megsebesülnek. Aubrey nem tudja eldönteni, hogy barátjára, az orvosra hallgasson, vagy a kötelességét teljesítse-e inkább. Végül mégis útra kel, hogy két óceánon keresztül üldözze, utolérje és legyőzze ellenfelét. Ez a küldetés megalapozhatja hírnevét - vagy elpusztíthatja őt és legénységét is.

Miután Crawford a franciák elleni ütközetben megsebesül, a hajó irányítása Scott-Padget kezébe kerül. A legénység azonban fellázad az új kapitány ellen, s Vizard-dal (Anthony Quayle), az elszánt tengerésszel az élén, átveszi az uralmat a hadihajó felett. A lelkiismeretes Crawford-nak nem marad más választása, meg kell győznie Vizard-t, hogy csatlakozzanak a franciák ellen küzdő angol flottához. Mikor azonban a bosszúszomjas Vizard meggyilkolja Scott-Padget-t, a legénység tagjain a sor, hogy eldöntsék: saját életüket mentik, vagy a haza szolgálatába állnak.
A film a II. Világháború egy megtörtént eseménysorát dolgozza fel, történetesen a háború kezdetén portyára induló és később elsüllyesztett Graf Spree névre keresztelt német zsebcirkáló és a szerencsétlen sorsot megért kapitány Langsdorff küzdelmét eleveníti fel meggyőző hitelességgel.
