제2차 세계대전 당시인 1940년, 프랑스 덩케르크 지역에서 진행된 연합군 구출 작전. 영화는 세개의 시공간을 동시에 진행시킨다. 도버 해협을 건너려는 영국군을 중심으로 한 잔교에서의 일주일, 민간 선박들의 자발적 참전과 차출이 이어지는 바다에서의 하루, 적기를 겨냥한 스피트파이어기 전투사가 있는 하늘에서의 한 시간. 전쟁의 전방위성, 공포의 상시성과 그 압도, 개별 공간을 떠난 공포의 유사성, 그 속의 다급함이 혼재되어 있는 가운데 전쟁과 죽음에의 공포와 생존을 향한 인간적 열망을 그린다.

In the early years of the World War II, the Royal Navy is fighting a desperate battle to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open to supply the British Isles, facing the great danger posed by the many German warships, such as the Admiral Graf Spee, which are scouring the ocean for cargo ships to sink.

2차대전 당시 상선의 선원이었던 에릭슨(Lt. CmDr. Ericson: 잭 호킨스 분)은 구축함인 '컴패스 로즈'의 함장에 임명된다. 하지만 에릭슨을 제외한 다른 선원들은 바다에 대한 경험이 전혀 없는 사람들이다. 에릭슨은 3주간의 훈련을 마친 이들과 함께 독일 잠수함의 공격을 막는 임무를 받고 대서양으로 나간다. 한편 비열한 성격의 소유자인 베넷 (First Officer Bennett: 스탠리 베이커 분) 대위가 떠나자 록하트(Sub-Lt. Lockhart: 도날드 신든 분)가 대위에 임명되어 에릭슨 함장의 오른팔이 된다. 어려운 일이 있을 때마다 록하트는 에릭슨에게 진심으로 위로를 했고, 서로에 대한 신뢰감은 굳어진다.

모두가 무서워하는 해적 옐로비어드(Captain Yellowbeard: 그레엄 채프먼 분)이 영국군에게 잡혀 20년의 징역살이를 한다. 그러나 영국군들의 생각과는 달리 원래 건장했던 옐로비언이 20년 후에도 말짱하자 영국군은 140년 연장을 명령한다. 20년을 참고 살아온 옐로비언의 분노가 드디어 폭발, 그는 감옥에서 뛰쳐 나온다. 그는 감춰둔 보물을 찾기위해 애를 쓰는데 그를 추격하는 영국 군인들에 의해 그의 아들이 잡히게 되어 해군 사령관의 프리깃 함대에 노예로 끌려간다. 배에 잠입한 옐로비언의 숨은 도움 때문에 노예들이 반란을 일으키고 그의 아들을 대장으로 추대한다. 그들 부자는 보물을 찾아 아일랜드로 향한다. 그러나 기쁨도 잠시 그의 부인을 협박하여 뒤쫓아온 영국군에게 보물들은 넘어간다. 보물을 빼앗긴 그들은 다시 배를 습격해 모든 것을 되찾고 옐로비언은 다시 해적선 깃발을 올리며 끝없이 항해에 나선다.

어뢰에 맞은 ‘토린’이라는 구축함이 기적적으로 구조돼 영국 해안에서 수리에 들어간다. 하지만 배의 페인트가 마르고, 수리가 끝나기도 전에 토린은 크레테 섬에서 한 번 더 폭격을 맞는다. 배에 탄 군인들은 다들 파편을 붙들고 구조를 기다리며 가족들과 사랑하는 이들을 떠올린다.

18세기 영국. 군함 데피앙트 호의 수병들은 상관인 스콧 대령에게 학대를 받는다. 함장인 크로포드는 어떻게 해서든지 스콧 대령의 행위를 멈추고 병사들의 불만을 누그러뜨리려 하지만 스콧 대령이 병사 한 명을 죽게 만들면서 반란의 기운이 점점 더 커져 가고 비 이생적인 조건과 질 낮은 음식, 가죽으로 된 채칙과 매질 등 가혹한 행위로 인하여 마침내 선상의 반란이 걷잡을 수 없을 정도로 커져만 가는데...

In World War II, the greatest threat to the British navy is the German battleship Tirpitz. While anchored in a Norwegian fjord, it is impossible to attack by conventional means, so a plan is hatched for a special commando unit to attack it, using midget submarines to plant underwater explosives.

The film was originally to be titled Up the Armada, but the British Board of Film Censors objected to such a rude title.

The Mediterranean, 1941/42 - Axis forces are using frogmen and manned torpedoes to attack previously impregnable harbours. The Allied forces need to come up with something to answer this threat, which they find in the form of Lt. Lionel "Buster" Crabb.

After a quayside mix-up with the Italian family of his fiancée, Able Seaman Knocker White finds himself literally left holding the baby. Unable to return it before his ship sails he enlists the help of best mate Puncher Roberts to smuggle the child aboard. But babies are surprisingly demanding and gradually the whole crew is drawn into helping keep it fed and washed - and undiscovered. Even so, the officers above deck start to puzzle over the increasingly strange happenings on board.

A war drama of motor torpedo boats which did much unsung work in WW2, but the naval battles merely provide an exciting story in which an even more special romantic drama is wrapped up.

In 1803, the only thing standing between Napoleon and his plan of world domination is England and the British Navy. The admiralty, learning that Napoleon has assembled an invasion fleet decides to send out one of its vessels to destroy it the French flagship under cover of fog. Forced out of retirement, ruthless, tyrannical and temperamental Captain William Blake is put in command. He wields his command with sadistic fury until an epidemic of scurvy attacks the crew and, when he refuses to go ashore for needed provision, mutiny and insubordination results...and, then, the French flagship arrives.

A Royal navy Commander is tricked by a pretty girl who is working for the Nazis. She tricks him into revealing some military secrets and he is court martial. He vows to track her and her accomplices down.

Norman Puckle, a well-meaning but clumsy grocer's assistant, can't seem to do anything right. After being rejected by Marlene, the love of his life, he attempts suicide, but can't even do that. He is saved from jumping off a cliff at 'Lover's Leap' by a Royal Navy petty officer. He persuades Puckle to join the Royal Navy, where he'll meet 'lots of girls'. Life in the Navy proves not to be as rosy as it's been described, and Puckle fails at every task during basic training. But despite this, he's regarded by the Admiral in charge of a rocket project to be a 'typical average British sailor', and chosen to be the first man to fly into outer space in an experimental rocket.

The background to, events of and consequences of the Battle of Mers-El-Kebir on 3 July 1940. In that battle, Royal Navy ships fired on the French Fleet in order to prevent it from falling into German hands. A French battleship was sunk and several other ships damaged. Nearly 1,300 French sailors were killed.
