Hushpuppy, een onverschrokken zesjarig meisje, woont bij haar vader Wink in "de Badkuip", een gemeenschap ten zuiden van de Mississippi-Delta aan de rand van de wereld. Alhoewel Wink van zijn dochter houdt bereidt hij haar met harde hand voor op de ineenstorting van het heelal, raakt de natuur van slag en stijgen de temperaturen. De ijskappen smelten en een leger van prehistorische wezens genaamd Aurochs wordt losgelaten. Met het water dat steeds maar stijgt, de Aurochs die komen en de gezondheid van Wink die achteruit gaat, gaat Hushpuppy op zoek naar haar verloren moeder.

Een schipbreukeling moet overleven op een tropisch eiland dat alleen bevolkt wordt door schildpadden, krabben en vogels. Hij zal zich moeten aanpassen om te kunnen overleven, hetgeen niet meevalt. Het verhaal betreft – zonder gesproken woord – de verschillende 'grote' fases die de schipbreukeling ondergaat.

Een visser krijgt bezoek van zijn vijfjarige kleinzoon en zoon, de pas gescheiden Jorge. TOKYO HIGH TIDE director Murakami Hiroyasu returns to the Tama River estuary to document Yoshida Tadayoshi, who has been conducting independent observations of crabs over a 15-year period. The camera's relentless focus on crabs brings to light a world not visible to the naked eye. The mud flats of the Tama River are home to a wide variety of crabs. Yoshida makes regular visits to these mud flats and records his observations on crab ecology. The film reveals the surprising behavior of crabs through fieldwork documenting Yoshida and the mud flats.

The crab loves to pinch each and everything. But the walrus family might be a challenge too big to handle.
