Having watched this movie recently and reading some commentary online, I really want to read the book...

The movie hints at a deeper meaning at levels of understanding beyond just the simple plot lines and characterisations of these lovers as they move from country to country and have their worlds turned upside down, etc...

I wonder if a more accomplished director could have addressed those philosophical themes that others have mentioned are in the book, but missing in the movie...
