How does it compare and stack up to Memento?
I don't want to waste my time if it's overrated. Magic/illusion master stuff isn't my thing.

it's a very different movie from momento...
momento was a thriller with time bending logic... the prestige is, ultimately, a rivalry movie between two magicians, but I'm really selling it short... there's a lot more to it... solid film...
memonto is more sensual, wheras the prestige is more dramatic... both are a lot more layered than their premise would suggest...
worth giving a shot...

I enjoyed both Memento and The Prestige. Both have a similar "feel" of the director performing a sleight of hand trick on the viewer.

they are compeltely different movies and Prestige ain't really about magic that much, it's more about stubborness and dedication and what are you willing to sacrifice to reach your goal, which if you realize in the end is quite horrifying
Memento is meh, it's just victory of form over content, if you would play the movie backwards in conventional way it would be maybe slightly above average movie and it's memorable only because of odd reverse timeline
personally I find The Prestige superior to Memento, also much better actors, better score (less trippy), better atmosphere. only worse movie than Memento from Nolan I have seen was Following

Lol. That doesn't convince me. Because memento is a masterpiece. The argument "if it went in sequential order" type is like saying "if star wars wasn't in the future and galaxy far away. It's the consequential art of the making if the film and the entire premise. Memento was outstanding, no doubt.
I might take your word for the prestige being good, but it is a film about magic, that I know, so that I'm not convinced of either.

I thought it was really good. Admittedly, I thought it wasn't as good a movie as Memento, but I enjoyed it more than Memento. It has a lot of Nolan to it and what you'd expect from a Nolan film, from the music to the cast to the twists, the pacing and cinematography etc etc.
I think if you're a fan of Nolan, or a fan film, or even just good story telling then you will like this. I agree the magic isn't the focal point of it all, and because of the magic I also had very little interest in going out of my way to see it. But it was on TV one night and I tuned it, and I'm glad I did.

It is a good sunday afternoon movie but it isn't mind blowing or Nolan's best, the twists were highly telegraphed.

This was my main problem with it. It's revelations are interesting but guessable very early on. It's still captivating though. Following aside, it's my least favourite of Nolan's films. But still definitely worth watching.

Saw it a few nights ago. I didn't like it that much. It was pretty good and the ending was cool, but it did focus too much on the stage show magic, and I found it too unrealistic and fantastical as a whole to take it seriously.
I read after there's some pretty big plot holes to the whole twist. Still, it was pretty well done so I gave it a 7/10.
Thanks for the input.

It's my personal favorite film of Nolan's and one of my all-time favorite films in general. It's not really about magic. There are many layers. But it's not everyone's cup of tea, so it may depend on what you like.

It is an absolute must IMO.
"Memento" cannot be compared at all... it is its own genre.
This one the story of a rising rivalry between talented illusionists, being told by either a narrator (Mr Cutter) or by one of the other 2 protagonists, through the reading of diaries. Set in late 19th century, the background is that marvelous world where illusion tricks were being presented as forms of entertaining magic, which will develop through making more intense use of visual fx (namely electricty powered tools, used for misdirection).
The movie lays before us several subtle hints, like one being a more "natural" illusionist, the other having a mysterious origin. Several secrets are revealed to show us the extent to which magicians would go, and how much more simple the explanation is - once you know it...
