While it's technically a well made movie and features many great performance by the cast, I feel that the film was very unfair in it's exaggerations of the events dipicted. I think nowadays people realize how unrealistic this film was but back when it was released it was very damaging to Turkeys reputation.

Spoiler below
The film can be a bit much. Toward the end, when the big guy got ready to rape Billy, I shook my head, feeling it went too far.

if you think xenophobic the movie doesn't pretend to b objective, it shows POV of William who was getting insane in turkish prison system, something similar happened to me in different country (with completely different culture than my own and turkish and ameican seem way closer), not in prison but long term stay there was driving me crazy and you see people in really bad light and have different understanding for them than some tourist visiting for few weeks, so I guss unless you lived in Turkey for years you can't really judge him and say he is wrong in his depiction

I wouldn't want to be in prison anywhere. Is there a prison movie that doesn't portray prisons and everything about them in the most horrible light?

Swedish prison seem very nice compared to our housing here in UK. I don't have the link but there are lots of prisons which can be a refuse for very poor (i am not suggesting people start robbing/etc.
