Discuter de L’Exorciste, la suite

I loved The Exorcist, the original 1970's film. The Heretic was silly and completely forgettable, aside from Linda Blair in some flimsy nightgowns. I remember watching a Pre-Exorcist movie (and director's cut version of it, too) around 2000s, but it wasn't that great.

I avoided Exorcist III because I'd heard bad things about it. Boy was I wrong! Exorcist III is easily the best of the Exorcist sequels and pretty darn good horror film in its own right. It has a very gritty style and cinematic ambience, and has a slow-burn, atmospheric approach to psychological / religious horror. This is NOT a slasher film, there is minimal blood, no BOO moments, and aside from a slight Hollywood concession to the climax with some effects, this is a thinking film. I thought George C Scott was great in this, just like he was in The Changeling, another superb and under-rated horror film.

The film isn't perfect (for instance, I thought the "villain" explained too much; it should have been left a bit more ambiguous), but I would list it among my favorite 1990s horror films (along with more traditional horror comedies like Dead Alive, Army of Darkness, Frighteners, plus The Ninth Gate). I would say, though, that this is a film ripped out of its proper time. No way does Exorcist III feel like a 90s film. Everything about it, from slow narrative, long shots, grainy photography, world-weary cinematography, etc., screams 1970s. And as it should, because this is the true and only real sequel to Exorcist.

My 2 cents...

I totally agree. Part 3 was the only good one aside from the original. Exorcist 2 was a joke.

Good analysis OP! I saw this in theaters when it was released and remember being quite BORED! The trailer sold it as something else and, being a fan of the original, tho with its own "slow burn" and epic Climax, it was more related because a kid was involved...following George C. Scott around this film, and me being a 15 year old, i was dissapointed...

ffwd to me being a little older and a LOT wiser wink I can truly appreciate what the filmmaker was going for & it is a great story in its own right. The climax kinda sticks out and feels "forced", but doesn't ruin the film.

Reminds me of the unofficial prequel "Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist" which ALSO is more of a thinking man's movie, interesting story behind that one, where TWO whole separate movies were filmed.

That is what I prefer, thinking person's horror flicks. I don't mind a jump scare every once and again (there's a good one in this) but a diet of those don't impress me really. I like a more psychologically scary story that will mess up my head.

On a related note, just finished the first season of the Netflix horror show 'Marianne' (GREAT show btw) that pay homage to the Nurse Scene from Exorcist III! Scene still manages to creep out!

The nurse scene was very 70’s-ish creepy. That slow slow burn when you knew something was going to happen, the static camera that didn’t move, and then when you finally let your guard down...!
