El psiquiatra neoyorquino Larry Livingston (Jeff Bridges) está casado con la hermosa Jo (Farrah Fawcett) y tiene dos hijos. El matrimonio, aparentemente un modelo de perfeccion, de repente deja de funcionar y se rompe. Jo se va con los niños dispuesta a proseguir su carrera de modelo de anuncios de televisión. Larry conoce en una fiesta a Beth Goodwin (Alice Krige), una fotógrafa de talento, viuda y con dos hijos, con la que acaba casándose.

Three years after his divorce from his model-wife is the psychologist Larry Livingstone ready for a new commitment. He falls in love with the young widow Beth who has two children. But Beth and the children are still in mourning over their dead husband and father and Larry finds it a bit difficult to penetrate their reservations. Larry himself has to deal with his ex-wife and his love for his own two kids. Slowly both Beth and the children realise that they have to go on with their lives and that they have been giving a second chance.

Larry e Beth si conoscono a un party. Lui ancora piange la bella moglie Jo che l'ha lasciato tre anni prima. Lei ancora non s'è ripresa dal suicidio del marito, celebre pianista. Con tutto il loro passato addosso, e con un paio di figli a testa, i due iniziano una relazione. I figli di Beth però non la prendono bene.
