The film was too sympathetic to the pervert, not necessarily in plot, although one can argue that as well, but more so in the way it is directed, shot and edited...
It's clearly meant to normalise such people... Highly subversive film...

I didn't get that from it. The guy admitted to having a psycho-sexual disorder and ended up cutting his johnson off. Do you think these people have these unsavory predilections voluntarily? It's not like being a criminal where you just decide to be a criminal. In most cases they were abused as kids and their wiring becomes all sorts of screwed up.

I'm not talking about the character, rather the director... it seems he went out of his way to make the audience feel a certain way about the guy, rather than let the audience draw their own conclusions...
With the other characters, you're left to make up your own mind about their moral dilemmas, their choices, their situations, etc... With, Ronnie, the perv, the movie seems to tell you how to feel...
At least that was my impression...

Well, that's the job of the director who's not making a documentary. I think the pervert was really just depicted as what he was, a victim.

the actress who played his mother was very good... tragic character, she made that small role seem so much larger

Weird, I can barely remember the mother. I mostly remember the pervert's date and how mortified she was when they got back to his house. She's a great actress also. Ya know what's odd? Wilson has been in at least 3 movies that feature castration.
