Der Filmemacher Lehmann hat ein großes Ziel: die Verfilmung von Kleists Kohlhaas. Doch als der Produktion bereits nach dem ersten Drehtag das Geld ausgeht, sind er, das gesamte Team und die Schauspieler gezwungen zu improvisieren. Dem Regisseur bleibt nur noch ein Rumpfteam und wenige Darsteller, wie zum Beispiel Kohlhaas' Frau Lisbeth, die diese Bürde auf sich nehmen. Immer verbissener versucht Lehmann nun, seine Vision durchzusetzen, und ist dabei auf die Mithilfe eines gesamten Dorfes an gewiesen. Als auch noch Lehmanns völlig entnervter Hauptdarsteller aufgibt, bleibt ihm nur noch eine Wahl: Er muss selbst zu Kohlhaas werden.
