Nominated for six Academy Awards, it features an excellent cast, directing, etc., including a screenplay adapted by Thornton Wilder from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play and a nostalgic production design by William Cameron Menzies. Hauntingly beautiful, at times heartbreaking, but with touches of gentle humor. It's truly an American classic, looking back at a time when milk was still delivered by a wagon hitched to a horse that had the route memorized to stop at customers' homes.
It is a metatheatrical three-act play:
Act I: Daily Life
Act II: Love and Marriage
Act III: Death and Eternity
Although set in turn-of-the-century New England, it is a timeless classic whose themes are universal. I defy anyone to watch this all the way through--especially the third act--without getting choked up.
