En 1914, Bosnia- Herzegovina era una provincia imperial del Imperio Austrohúngaro. En junio de ese año, durante una visita oficial a Sarajevo, su capital, el príncipe heredero Francisco Ferdinando de Austria y su esposa fueron asesinados en un atentado callejero perpetrado por jóvenes bosnios, incidente que dio origen nada menos que a la Primera Guerra Mundial. Los alcances de la conspiración que lo permitió nunca fueron del todo aclarados. Este telefilme austriaco es una crónica de una supuesta investigación llevada adelante por un juez de instrucción serbio-bosnio para esclarecer los móviles y últimos responsables del atentado.

La película del austriaco Andreas Prochaska propone una tesis revisionista sobre la conspiración, en un film realizado en ocasión de cumplirse un siglo de ese atentado y del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial.

El juez de instrucción Leo Pfeffer (un impertérrito Florian Teichtmeister) lleva adelante la investigación encargada por Viena y supervisada por el comandante militar y el jefe de policía locales. Desde su punto de vista, nos asomamos a aspectos de la administración austriaca de sus “provincias imperiales” (en realidad países anexados-ocupados) con su discriminatorio trato de los eslavos serbios y los judíos y su justicia sumaria. Tampoco faltan los millonarios locales que apoyan al régimen. La teoría conspirativa esgrimida por el film, que va siendo progresivamente revelada por el juez Pfeffer, levantó polémica en su momento.
