so they have fridge, piano and other stuff but there is no road nearby? what they did bring it by helicopter or seaplane? I don't think so, that leaves water travel to look for civilization
also why not try fishing?

There probably was a road but they couldn't see it because of the snow and Ben also mentioned that there was so much that he almost got buried twice in it and as for fishing the cabin was pretty abandoned so i don't think that there was a fishing rod.

they were in forest, I'm sure you can find one long stick and make string from clothes or whatever and bait from anything shiny

Yes I see your point, if they really wanted to stay and survive in the cabin they could have there were rabbits the pond and if it was me there i would have waited til march there. The string from clothes wouldn't have worked or it would have to be really thick and even then the durability isn't that good. For fishing you need a fishing line it's durable but their best bet would have been a wire, there had to be a wire in the walls or somewhere around.

Well... It worked out for them in the end...
