(Now to be perfectly honest, the principal reason I watched this film wasn't out of interest of the story or the main actors, but for Ana de Armas. I've set a goal of watching her filmography before Bond 25 is released to get an idea of what she's capable of. And, well, also because she's STUNNING.)

But back on topic, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this film. I think the choice to have dark humor in this drama helped a lot. It's like how Kubrick took a serious subject he found absurd and made Dr. Strangelove a type of comedy. Hill is especially funny, although not always laugh-out-loud funny, as he plays a character you both like and hate. Of course the issue is that they take many liberties with the comedic pieces (the Triangle of Death scene must have been fictional) and this is meant to be a true story. Well 'based on a true story' but you get what I mean. I read about what they changed or added to the real story and some of it is far reaching. Even Iz, Ana's character, is completely made up. So they made the better film, but for the price of the audience not knowing what was or wasn't real. The core of the story is believable though. Which makes me wonder why they thought it was so spectacular that they definitely had to make this movie.

But the real strength of the film I think is that it helps show a part of war that people rarely think about which is the money involved and how messed up the system for arming troops really is for the US. And as I mentioned above, I've now read up a bit about this industry so I guess the film succeeded in being a catalyst for knowing the reality of the world back in the late 2000s. No idea if it's the same today, but that's not the film's focus. All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone anyone who's ever considered watching it. It's well worth it.
