Discuss Hacksaw Ridge

I went into this wanting to like it, knowing it was a true story..

The first hour is a home-front dramatic boring soap opera, then corny spoon-fed humor during boot camp with Vince Vaughn as the fat DI! Not once was there an F-bomb anywhere in the movie, not quite WWII era grunt realism. "gee-golly gosh-darn"

Next we have a Law&Order case type movie, I was checking my watch at that point maybe over an hour in.. I really felt nothing for this character given the direction.

Now we get to battle, with a character I really don't feel for, here's Mel's redundant video-game like battle scenes: Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade*Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade*Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade*Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade*Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade*Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade*Machine-gun/Flame-thrower/grenade* ...Of course with some CGI thrown in, and childish zombie type jump-scares. I don't want to hear that's how it was, yes battles have highs and lulls, but this fast paced editing is just what a 12yr old would eat up. But yet we are not playing COD, we're supposed to be watching an Oscar worthy movie?? Ya right, I'll forward all my bank account on paypal to anyone who wants it if this wins an Oscar.

The soundtrack was lacking, the most generic type classic scores playing.

There was no art in this film, just a overlong drawn out made-for-tv style movie..

What happened to great anti-war movies like: Platoon, Thin Red Line, Stalingrad 93', Hamburger Hill, Beach Red, Long days Dying, Come and See, Cross Of Iron, Rescue dawn, Rumor Of War, and 84 Charlie Mopic? All these new war movies are so watered down, and comedic like SPR, Windtalkers, or Hacksaw, all I can think of is the producers want the kids to buy tickets, as adults don't pay off anymore.

I have nothing but respect for the vets this movie was based off, I just wish some better director got a hold of the story, or a full feature documentary was done on it.

Haha you think HSR is realistic to what WWII was like? You must have never read or seen any documentary on WWII before ..

and

Let me guess the only other WWII films you've seen is SPR, BoB, Fury, and Windtalkers right?

Now you're assuming and making things up ! I never claimed HR was realistic. (are you 12 ?) Besides, a movie doesn't have to be realistic to be a good one.

Japanese soldiers like mindless ants running into get killed.

Look up the word Kamikaze. (Granted, there weren't any Japanese pilots in the movie, but still same mentality.)

The majority of others agree with me, my credibility is fine, and sorry this won't win an Oscar.

You wish :)

(what's BoB ?)

This guy's an idiot. He's a troll. Used to be on imdb. Dirt bags like him are why the boards shut down.

Notice how he lies and makes stuff up that is proven to be false. Pos.

you will burn me on cross, but I turned off Hacksaw Ridge after first few sentences praising lord and other religious nonsense, sorry, can't watch movie pushing such agenda, was expecting some war movie I will enjoy, but already the religious beginning was very offputing (and just here in discussion I learned it's made by Gibson, so the religious crap should not come as surprise)

Dude, the thing is though this is a true story, and that's central to Doss' real life character. It's who he was in real life. He was a religious devoted guy. If they didn't display that, then it wouldn't have been Doss. He was an outspoken member of the 7th Day adventist church, and it influenced his actions in the war...It's character development, and all truth.

Also, Gibson turned down the script about three times before they convinced him to make it so it wasn't like he wrote the story or enthusiastically rushed in. He was reluctant.

The script was based on the documentary on Doss, The Conscientious Objector. Imo, you missed a great one. Try to give it another try with an open mind understanding that's who the real Doss was and why he did what he did on the battlefield. He wouldn't kill anyone because it was against his religion.

@Heisenberg12 I guess I should have read more about backstory before trying to watch it, the plot didn't seem that religious to me, so I started to watch and was immediately turned down, so just switched it off and passed on without rating.

Haha you got made I "bashed" this for being unrealistic, please re-read again, Umm this is based on a real story, are you 12? Reality doesnt have to be real? ok?

Can you read, the majority do, look at the first few replies, and they keep coming

Okay, $1000 it wins an Oscar.

I've said a hundred times for months LA La Land is a lock for BP and fits it.

Majority don't agree. Go to RT, IMDB, etc. Top rated film of the year by audiences other than LLL. This thread means zilch. People know you're a troll and a dillweed.

If you can't afford $1k, I'll give you a chance to make some back and bet you $300 more it wins 2 Oscars. If you win that one, you'd only owe $700.

You're delusional, bro. You lie over and over. I think you believe it. You're just a liar and nuts. You're a total psycho.

The more you post, the more people see how stupid you are. You actually think this won't win 1 Oscar? Well see Sunday, but you would never pay up if it was $10 lol.

Keep lying and trying to convince yourself of these things. Sadly, I think you believe your lies and are beyond help.

And no, idiots like you are why the boards shut down. Fool.

[@Heisenberg12]

Will u still respond after this DOESN'T win the Oscar, or will u be a coward and hide? I won't even ask you to pay me the $1000 that's ridiculous for a kid like you to afford, the fact you think HSR would win best pic, I'm honestly worried about you, you would compare HSR to Platoon, The Deer Hunter, and Bridge On the River Kwai? Other Oscar winning war movies? Get real man.

Yes, it's a bit corny at times but still overall a very watchable film. Yeah, it's not as good as some war films of the past and a little overrated but it's still an enjoyable ride. The way I look at it is this at least got Gibson back into the game to finish "berzerker" the viking epic we have all been waiting for.

[@Heisenberg12]

It didn't win any significant Oscars where's my money chump?

Corny & overated are some of the problems.

First let me say that this is undoubtedly technically well-done.

What I found problematic is that it felt like war porn. Meaning, that it's a glorification of war by paradoxically showing how horrifying it is. If it were a truly honest film, the one "sex" scene (if you want to call it that) would or should have been equally as "graphic" as the war scenes.

I didn't find the main character's moral convictions problematic though. He saw the Japanese as the enemy and aided in their defeat but without pulling the trigger himself. It's a moral compromise that all human beings make. In addition he somehow transcended his horror of the battlefield to ease & comfort and save the lives of wounded soldiers.

I would have appreciated the film more if it curtailed the sappiness of its religousity and played it more straight & honest (Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line I think is a good example of how to depict the conflict of war and religous belief).

Sorry, this movie is a masterpiece. Mel Gibson is one of the best Hollywood directors and with every movie he's cementing his place as a cinema legend.
