More than fun. I thought of it as a bit of a history lesson, and really felt sorry for the pilot going through all that he went through even though he was doing all he could to help the CIA. I'd like to know how much of the movie is based from the true story.
Well, apparently the director called the movie "a fun lie based on a true story". Which I can settle for. It was an okay film. I really like when Tom Cruise does something different but I wouldn't add this to my recommended Tom Cruise flicks.
I just recently rewatched this and did a little research on the actual history which it seems is very different than the movie (as usual). As with anyone who "works for the CIA," there's no way to prove that and of course they deny it completely. It's funny that Barry Seal finds his way into films and episodic shows. He was mentioned in Narcos when the Colombian detectives were trying to figure out who was flying Escobar's drugs out of the country (they deduced that no Colombian would call himself Ellis McPickle, Seal's alias), and he's portrayed in "The Infiltrator."
A quirky tale, told very well, but in a kind of formulaic way that felt like you'd seen a fair bit of it before (particularly Seal's domestic situation).
I'm developing a belated appreciation for Cruise. Sure, he signs up for a lot of artistically bereft films (to pay the bills), but he is often very watchable and has more range than some other big names.

I walked out of this one disappointed. "American Made" has connection whatsoever to American Gangster, American Ultra, American Ninja, American Me, or American Gigolo
Did you mean to say has "no" connection?

I only went and seen it because I have moviepass but I was pleasantly surprised. I rate it a typical Tom Cruise/10.

Maybe you should try "Legend" (1985.)
