Discuss The Firm

Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise) straight out of law school unbeknown to him goes to work for a law firm who's main client is the mafia. McDeere has to find some way of removing himself from the firm without getting himself killed.

Avery Tolar (Gene Hackman) his mentor in the law firm, always plays a good bad guy.

Enjoyable except for the sound track which I found grating. I guess it just depends on taste.

Funny...I love the soundtrack and bought it. I love jazz so that's definitely why.

I found Avery to be conflicting. In the book, he has no reservations about working for an evil firm and being one of its tools. In the movie, I found a battle within.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. McDeere's dedication to learning as much about his job as possible is an inspiration to me. It gets me excited about my own work.

There you go... I'm not a jazz fan relaxed

One of my favourite movies too. Also I love most of Tom Cruise movies.

I thought Holly Hunter was great in this too.

One of my favorite exchanges in the movie:

"I love your crooked little mouth."

"That's not my best feature."

"Wow. Well, what is?"

I enjoyed the soundtrack as well. And I agree with GForce59 that Avery was conflicted, although I think his character could have been fleshed out a bit more. A really fun movie.

I created a post for this but it may not be seen in a while. Do you think Avery could have committed suicide, and not have been killed by the firm?

It's definitely a possibility... He looked kind of suicidal at the end.

Plus, if I remember correctly, DeVasher said he wanted Avery brought back to Memphis. If so, why would albino guy kill him? Avery killing himself prevented him from not only being interrogated and possibly tortured, but also giving away Abby.

It was decent although we've all seen Cruise as the brilliant, principled young man taking a stand in a crew world before. I've not read the book but really liked the movie ending in showing a lawyer passionate about his profession.
