I love the film and - when/if I eventually make my own list - I'm sure it'll be somewhere around the top 15-20, but it's a surprising pick for the no. 1 spot. I guess it is a zeitgeist thing - it was seen as a breakthrough film in that it represented a particular sector who are rarely portrayed on film, and it did receive near unanimous raves. Still an odd choice.

While Moonlight is a very, very good film, should it really be number 1?

We all know why it's number 1 and I'm not surprised that it's at the top. But while the casting and portrayal of minorities is something that should be praised and encouraged, is that reason in itself to hold it above other films that are arguably better crafted, deeper or more profound?

A film should be judged by the craft within the film and not who is in it and who it's about. Is the craft within Moonlight really better than the craft in the hundreds of other films that have been released this decade?

I guess it's as good a choice as any... huge critical acclaim, historical significance, some dazzling craft (I do think it's one of the most beautifully shot American films of the last few years). These rankings are usually decided by polling so a film like Moonlight - which may not be many folks' number one choice but is positioned reasonably highly by many - can seize the top spot. As I said, I wouldn't have placed it on top myself, but there are many worse choices (some of which figure highly in the poll and could well have beaten it).

There does seem to be a lot of odd decisions in there. You'll scroll down a load of indie, art films and then suddenly you'll have Mission Impossible: Fallout. I'm not knocking MI: Fallout. I enjoyed it. But really? That's what you're choosing to represent blockbuster cinema? With no sign of Blade Runner 2049 or The Raid.

How did The Last Jedi get in there considering all the flack it gets everywhere?

And isn't The Great Gatsby supposed to be really bad? A random, long forgotten, critically panned film from about 10 years ago. Very strange.

But there were also quite a few films I was glad to see in there.

I found that curious, too. The list heavily leaned into the arty/indie area of films, but then threw in the odd blockbuster.
