I wasn't expecting much but he finally pulled off a good film, 16 years after Unbreakable. I look forward to a sequel and more teenage girls :-)

Idon't like M Night any more than you do, but I did find "The Visit" to be somewhat enjoyable. I'm willing to give "Split" a chance. it doesn't look too bad, judging from the trailer, at least. I notice that a lot of people who don't like Shyamalan seem to accept this movie. I don't know what is it about this guy, but even though I mostly don't like his films, I still get curious when he makes a new film.

Split is a good film. I watched it straight through. I hadn't ever heard of The Visit seeing as how I kind of gave up on Night. Thanks for the tip.

The Visit was good, generic style horror film. I love that genre so I don't mean in a bad way, just a description of the style. The ending makes you rethink some of the scenes from the movie, so it's good on that level. In most films I'd want to see it again from the other perspective but some of the crappy scenes (literally) and poor script would make the second viewing equal pulling teeth.
MongoLloyd, there is another film of his from around the same time period is "Devil." He didn't write or direct it but it's based on a story of Nights. I recommend you seek this little gem out of you haven't seen it.

I've actually seen Devil and remember liking it.

That's not vague at all. Too bad RT has it at 75%. The whole idea that an MPD can have quantifiable changes in their physicality manifest as a result of different personalities is fascinating if not merely interesting.

The only movies that I think were bad by Night are: Last Airbender, After Earth, The Happening (although the story idea is very cool)
I can understand people not liking Lady in the Water as it was a fairy tale. And Signs had a weak ending but was A+ other than that.
Night is phenomenal at characterization. His movie quality is top tier. I've always been shocked by the trendy M Night hate out there. I wonder if Rod Serling had a similar cult of hate following his work.

isn't that the one where they dropped the toast with jam? If it falls jam down - the devil is around. The movie was serious about it too. Watching this scene I distinctively remember thinking - WTF. The Signs were even funnier and more stupid than Scary movie parody. The Split is just like all his movies except (spoilers) does not have a twist at the end. Just got back from the cinema. Thanks god i was with a friend and we entertained themselves by making fun of it. If i went alone, i'd be asleep within first hour. It's not scary, doesn't have structure or tension of plot. McAvoy is a good actor and personality disorder can be a fascinating subject for a horror film, but due to idiotic writing he just looked retarded through most of the movie.

He directed it great for the first 2/3. I thought the end a bit got a little too far fetched and out of c ontrol and became a typical kind of sci fi-horror end. But it was effectively scary and creepy. Idk though; I still think I liked Unbreakable Signs, Sixth Sense a lot more. Even the Village I think I liked a little more than this. It was too dark, but people who like that stuff would enjoy this more. It was "pretty" good to me, but not among his top 4.

The Village was great. Highly underrated. Signs towers over 95% of the movies in that genre. Even the Happening has redeeming qualities, it's unintentionally hilarious.
Devil, which he was involved with, is intense. The Visit was ok. A bit too cute for my tastes, but above average film
Even though I liked Split quite a bit, I'd go as far as to say that The Village tops it. The directing, writing and themes of the film are just so much stronger.

I don't disagree that it got a little cheesy towards the end, but I was just so happy it was a good movie that I was willing to cut Night some slack.

i think he pulled off a decent film (at least it was better than the visit - that one was a joke, sorry m night). now i sure don't look forward to a sequel. the only m night's movies i actually liked were sixth sense (obviously his one hit wonder) and the happening (it was a creepy movie). i also kind of liked lady in the water. as for the rest.. meh.

Sixth Sense was just SOOO good at the time and was always a tough act to follow. I remember being very dissapointed by his follow up, Unbreakable when I came out of the theater. Everything that came out after wasn't much better IMO.
Was at Universal FL last year late September and was early waiting on Halloween Horror Nights to kick off. To kill time we watched The Visit..despite some legitimate creepy scenes, the movie was pretty lame as well. Split was a step up from that but not a movie I'd consider "great". Not sure if M.Night has another good movie in him to be honest.
And someone compared M.Night to Rod Serling?!?! SHAME ON YOU!!!

How many episodes of Twilight Zone sucked? The answer is quite a few. Serling was a genius but not perfect. The comparison is not unrealistic for both genre, style, and track record.
