Über Mute diskutieren

Unlike, Blade Runner 2049 second half of which turned into a conventional Hollywood run of the mill product, Mute was much more dense and thematic.

I liked the neo-noir_esque_ mood and the crowded retro-futuristic look of the city. The concepts and designs were very well done. Visually brilliant too!

I know many of those who saw the movie felt it disjointed or couldn't relate to the characters' motivation & action.

But for this film, the Audience is required to think and connect the dots.

The film keeps revolving around a circle of specific characters and does not explore outside. We tend to think that there's an elaborate outside story to Naadirah's disappearance but we find out that its just within the canvas of the key characters and yet doesn't give away more answers or outlook on character's motivation. This is a common attribute of a proper Film-Noir. So I'm not surprised to see someone who's disspointed.

I think Duncan Jones would've done better job than Denis Villeneuve. That being said, I liked Blade Runner 2049; sufficient enough to rate 7/10.

I would need a second watch for 'Mute' to conclude my rating.

I agree with your assessment of the first half of Mute and it's neo-noir elements in addition to the cyberpunk aesthetic, but I do not think that it worked fully...

I did like how it made a mockary of the nerdy contemporary masculinity that the near future villains are based on (the surgeons in particular) as contrasted with the anarchronistic code of the Amish protagonist Leo... So there is some interesting subtext there, but one the whole it felt a lot less cinematic than his earlier movies... Even Moon and Source Code which were relatively small scale movies managed to carry their sense of mood and atmosphere to the very end...

The latter third of the movie felt a bit too much like a TV movie in that sense... Which it is...

I will probably revisit the movie at some point to see whether or not my view will change, but it felt like a lesser movie than it could have been..

I wonder what Jones would have made of a Blade Runner sequel, or better yet an original story, unencumbered by fan service, that was meant to be told on a cinematic scale with a proper theatrical release as oppose to one designed to be streamed on ipads and TVs...

Disclaimer: I watched this movie projected on a 106" sized screen with a decent sound system... The first half of the movie is cinematic and shows what is possible, but I really do think that the choice of making this for Netflix as opposed to for a theatrical release must have influenced things... It's just my personal impression...

Yeah, I agree with both of your comments and the obvious comparisons that inevitably come to mind with BladeRunner (although still in many ways this film was completely unique). It did feel as though the first half (or maybe 2/3's?) was more cinematic and deep...indeed even a bit disorienting. The clichés were a bit much, but the last act where tensions resolved seemed disconnected from the buildup. While it was satisfying to watch in some ways, in others it really left me wanting.

Still, all in all a decent film! 7/10 for me.
