Gale comes up with the copycat theory inside the police station with only Dewey and the sheriff present. As soon as she leaves, Debbie Salt pops up and mentions the killer repeating Woodsboro. Perhaps we're to assume that the police released some kind of statement, as the other reporters don't act surprised at what she says. But I have trouble believing that the police would just give away that kind of information.
