The somewhat caracaturistic nature of some characters, the predictable portrayal of northern England as inferior to the south and the (intentionally?) limited performances and dialogue really seem to rub people up the wrong way. As does the general lack of plot or direction and what appears to be unremitting negativity.
Then others love it. The portrayals and performances of Mary and Carl in particular, the parts of the characters that we recognise in people we know. The obsevation on the impact that ageing has on people, even people barely leaving their 20s.
I agree with pretty much all those perspectives and think different people will take different things away from it. My overriding sense was one of relief that being comfortable in your own skin (rather than desperately seeking someone) means you avoid a lot of anxiety and grief that is on display here. But I dont think that is what the director was aiming for.
