Any ideas what the mixture was they dumped into the river to make the gold glow? I assume it's fictional, but is there anything close to doing anything like that?

Gold is one of the least reactive chemical elements. There are few chemical reactions with it, and no known luminous.
P.S. In the movie was demonstrated high concentration of quite large nuggets in a very small pond. Just row your gold with a shovel.

Yeah, really, if they're that large, they'd be pretty easy to spot in the daylight.
