Liked it but not their game choices...

I am a full-on board game geek so I felt very let down that the writers of this movie didn't display any sophistication with their game choices. They busted out clunky old saws like Life, Monopoly, and Clue when they could have shown some knowledge of their source material with some basics like Catan, Carcassone, or 7 Wonders. The Charades was fine. It is an ok game for social groups and was instrumental to the plot (as was the Jenga) so I do not fault them for that. I also give them credit for Scrabble which is a fantastic old game but they brought it to a large group of people (scrabble is 4 player max) so I cringe at the thought that they really didn't know sweet F.A. about games when they wrote this. Bateman could have shown up with a stack of really good games like Terraforming Mars, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, or Dominion and their street cred would have skyrocketed. Alas.
Thought it was a funny movie though. Not super funny but I got many laughs. 7.5/10

I liked the game choices. It's what I'm familiar with and I don't know any of the ones you mentioned. The writers probably picked titles like that due to overall popularity at least at one point in time. Today I don't know of many people (non at all actually) who play any board games.

True but they could have at least thrown in some contemporary offerings to prove some authoritative platform.
I am sure that there is a regular meet-up group in your town that plays modern board games. They are everywhere. I meet twice a week with a group of 4 to 8 players. We play some games that take 4 to 5 hours to play and require lots of focus and some games that are light, 30 minute fare. We look down our noses at games like Life and Sorry because they lack interesting mechanics and are put to shame by thousands of newer games.
Check out Boardgamegeek.com to get a sense of how big the hobby is. Insanely huge in Europe and spreading like mad in the US.

I will say that was certainly different. I couldn't find a state by state section as I was wondering how many people in Arizona were members. In any case, I just happen to get with a group of people about once a month to play pinball.

There is a website called something like meetup.com where various venues of interest are tent poled for gathering strangers together. Board gamers use this to great success. There's a group here in Palm Springs that meets at a pizza joint (I would attend but have a regular home-grown gang) and Ive seen through the site that many many nearby cities have similar game groups meeting up.
Good gateway boardgames for the new standard of quality include Ticket to Ride, Dominion, Splendor, and Settlers of Catan. All excellent games and available at Target. These games are easy to learn and play and almost always lead to deeper game enthusiasm. You may find yourself with a closet filling up with high difficulty games.
Pinball club sounds very cool.

Man, I love the interwebs.
I thought the board games were adequate in that they reflected what a wide swath of the audience would have known, heard of or played. Your point is well taken though. I have played a couple of the games you are talking about, but at its heart this film is simply a rom-com/thriller dressed up with a thematic element. I liked that they showed the evolution of game play (from kid brothers to bars to home groups for the protagonist) and even linked it to competitive parenting. Wildly entertaining considering what could have come of the arcane nature of the subject.
