Another reason is they want to use ABBA songs that are not in the original play. Plus, with the original being a very successful film at the box office why not?! Also, they got the original filmmakers back for this film even if Ol Parker replaces Phyllida Lloyd as director.

I just saw this movie at a preview screening last night. They reused a surprising amount of songs from the first movie.

I guess the studios felt like the movie would make a profit. All I’ve seen of the first film were short clips. I don’t need to see the film to enjoy ABBA’s music. It’s a cool story concept and although I am a fan of all the lead actors, Mama Mia just never interested me at all. I just felt like the story was boring and the actor’s singing and dancing weren’t good enough. I’m really not that interested in seeing this sequel.

The real reason is to promote tourism to Croatia (where the island is - Vis - with the beach voted Best Beach In Europe 2016)

I think the world deserves to hear more of Pierce Brosnan's rich beautiful voice. I'm sure that's the reason.

What was with Pierce being so out of shape and out of breath every time they moved around lol. They would like walk up 3 steps and he'd be out of breath or had to take a breather? WHAT was up with that?

It was a running joke with all of the older characters. Just like with Tanya complaining that it is harder to get to the church every time they make the trip.
