Dans la ville dévastée de Mexico, Malboro est relâché au petit matin après 5 ans de prison. Il va alors croiser l’ensemble des protagonistes de son arrestation : son jeune frère Cucu, aujourd’hui boxeur ; son oncle Jesus, qui les a élevé ; son ancienne petite amie Sara qui a épousé depuis le policier qui avait arrêté Malboro…

Malboro wychodzi z więzienia po pięciu latach. Gangster najbardziej chce spotkać się ze swoim młodszym bratem Cucu, mimo tego, że większość jego znajomych posądza chłopca o wydanie Malboro policji. W międzyczasie Malboro odwiedza swoją byłą dziewczynę Sarę, która teraz jest związana z największym jego wrogiem, policjantem Rojasem. Mężczyźni postanawiają zagrać w karty, co będzie początkiem do wielu przedziwnych zwrotów akcji.

Malboro and Cucu, the starring characters, are two brothers who split after the older one, Malboro, went to prison five years. One day he is set free, willing to return to his life. Cucu is the younger brother, who has become a boxer with possible success, if only the beater he keeps somewhere inside, didn't arise in the worst moments. The relationship between the two brothers is somehow ambiguous, there's something unclear that caused Malboro's arrest. To complete the triangle is Uncle Jesus who has been like a father to them; a retired boxer who's always thinking about his past. Sara is Malboro's great love, a woman full of shame and resented after almost leaving her whole life behind to follow Malboro, but he failed in their attempt to run away because that same night, he got arrested by Rojas. Rojas is Sara's husband, a police officer who hates Malboro and will do anything to get him out of his way...

"Fuera del cielo" transcurre en un solo día... en 24 horas exactas. Comienza a las 6 de la mañana con el regreso, tras una ausencia de 5 años, de Malboro (Demián Bichir), el hermano mayor del Cucú (Armando Hernández) y, a partir de ese instante, y con el paso de las horas, los hermanos inician un viaje por los diferentes lugares que habitan los seres cercanos a ellos, teniendo tan sólo hasta las 6 de la mañana del día siguiente para demostrarse su cercanía y lealtad.
